World Tourism Day – 27 September

by | Oct 7, 2022

On September 27, the United Nations observes World Tourism Day. It is a day to promote travel because it not only enhances our lives but is also vital for a nation’s politics and economics.

The best method to broaden our views and increase our understanding of various cultures is through travel, which also makes us more tolerant and friendly. Because of this, another goal of World Tourism Day is to increase public awareness of the need to make travel and tourism more accessible to all.

History of World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day was established by the UN World Tourism Organization in September 1979, and its inaugural events took place on September 27 of the following year. The UNTWO Statutes were enacted on September 27, 1970, which was chosen as the day to observe this holiday since it marked a significant turning point for tourism globally.

These Statutes encourage the growth of tourism as a means of economic development and international cooperation while upholding everyone’s entitlement to basic liberties and human rights.

Ideal Timing

The UNWTO thinks the timing of World Tourism Day is ideal because it coincides with the end of the peak travel season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere, a time when travel and the tourism industry are of particular interest to many people worldwide.

Promoting tourism is essential for a nation’s economy since it lowers unemployment rates by helping to create new jobs in the hospitality industry. Additionally, travelers on vacation have a tendency to spend more money. Tourism generates billions of dollars annually, which is enormous, especially for developing nations.

The UNWTO General Assembly decided to choose a host nation each year to serve as the Organization’s partner in commemorating World Tourism Day at its Twelfth Session in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 1997.

Last year, the chosen country was the Ivory Coast with the theme ‘Tourism for Inclusive Growth. This year Indonesia will be the host country with the theme ‘Rethinking Tourism.’

How Do I Celebrate World Tourism Day?

World Tourism Day is best observed by going through your bucket list of places you’ve always wanted to visit. If you can’t get yourself there right away, make plans for the future and go on a shorter trip to get yourself in the habit of getting out and seeing the globe.

If you reside in a popular tourist destination, you can learn more about the industry there and what you can do to preserve the historical and cultural landmarks of your community while educating visitors about its wonders.

What Do People Do on World Tourism Day?

On World Tourism Day, many events are held, including picture contests that promote tourism and tourism award ceremonies in categories including ecotourism. Other actions include offering the general public free admission, discounts, or special deals to any museums, parks, beaches, or tourist-related locations.

On or around September 27, government and community leaders may make public announcements or provide special tours or prices as representatives of the tourist industry to promote both their area and World Tourism Day.

‘Rethinking Tourism’, 2022

At the beginning of 2022, there were twice as many foreign arrivals as there were in 2021. Arrivals in some areas have reached or even surpassed pre-pandemic levels.

Millions of individuals around the world will experience hope and opportunity when the last remaining travel restrictions are lifted, along with increasing consumer confidence.

The celebration of World Tourism Day comes at a time when tourism is acknowledged as a vital pillar of development and advancement is already well advanced. The United Nations General Assembly had a special debate on tourism for the first time in May 2022, demonstrating the industry’s historical importance. Governments and international organizations in every worldwide region are now focusing on tourism.
