Every year on September 30, we celebrate International Translation Day, and this year is no different. But the question of why we celebrate International Translation Day may come to mind, as well as why September 30 was chosen as the day for celebration.
Keep reading our Day Interpreting blog to find out all of this plus more.
Let’s dive right in!
Why Celebrate International Translation Day?
September 30 marks the centuries-long anniversary of the feast of St. Jerome. St Jerome is believed to be the very first Bible translator in history. He translated the bible from Greek to Latin in his initial attempt, and then he went further to correct the New Testament against the original Hebrew version.
St. Jerome is known as the patron saint for translators. It is believed that St Jerome died on September 30 in the year 420.
The Importance of International Translation Day
2017 was a great and historical milestone for translators, interpreters, and language professionals all over the world. At the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, it was unanimous to adopt a Resolution titled A/RES/71/288.
This resolution recognized the role of professional translators and other language professionals as important in connecting nations across the world, fostering peace, creating understanding, and pushing forward development.
This same resolution also saw the United Nations General Assembly declaring September 30 as the UN’s International Translation Day. This day from then onwards, every year, is to be celebrated across the entire United Nations network.
On international translation day, the world pauses to appreciate and pay tribute to the very vital and important work that language professionals do.
It’s widely known that Language brings people and cultures together and helps push business and so many other important processes forward. But, without language professionals as the driving force, much of this would not happen.
International Translation Day is a time for the world to recognize how the role of language professionals affords nations the opportunities to come together. It allows them to showcase their work, facilitates dialogue, brings about the possibility of cooperation and understanding, and the opportunity to contribute to development. This sort of unity is bound to bring about a more cohesive and interconnected world inevitably.
Celebrating International Translation Day
International Translation Day is celebrated this year under the theme: “A World Without Barriers.” The significance of the theme is found in the fact that a world without barriers is a world with an abundance of possibilities.
Already, translators, interpreters, and every other language professional help to break down so much more than language barriers on a daily basis. Their contribution to the United Nations and other industries helps to bring about better communication that is efficient and transparent. Their job makes it easier for everyone to stay connected and have mutual understanding and respect.
