Conference Interpreting Equipment for Professionals

by | Jun 27, 2022

It’s no small feat to set up a multilingual event. And the same can be said for the conference interpreting equipment that professional interpreters use to facilitate communication at these events. Depending on your event and linguistic needs, there are various options to consider.

As a leading language services provider, the team at Day Interpreting often encounters clients that don’t understand conference interpreting tools or their importance. There’s actually a great deal of planning and coordination that goes into setting up conference interpretation. Aside from selecting interpreters for the job, we also need to ensure that the equipment like soundproof booths, consoles, and microphones are set up correctly.

In this post, we share some interesting insights into the type of interpretation tools our interpreters use and why each one is important!

Your Event Type Determines the Required Conference Interpreting Equipment

If your event requires simultaneous interpreting, there are a few things you’ll need to consider. The amount of space you have, the type of event you’re hosting, and your budget will all influence your choice of equipment.

In most cases, we equip our interpreters with wired microphone systems that allow the audience to hear what the speaker says in their native language through wireless headphones. Generally, our interpreters work from soundproof booths, but if the events are smaller and less formal, it isn’t always necessary to use as much equipment.

Consecutive and Simultaneous Conference Interpreting Equipment Options

Generally speaking, we don’t always equip our interpreters with all of these conference interpreting equipment options. Whenever there’s a need for simultaneous interpretation services at large events, we bring out the big guns. But you might only need a portable tool for your event! It all depends on your venue, audience size, source language, audio distribution, overall sound quality, floor language, and target language.

Here’s a look at the kind of translation tools that we use to facilitate multilingual events:

Wired Microphone Systems

A wired microphone system with a built-in language channel listening for every audience member will generally be used for large conferences that need spoken word translation services. Multi-channel audio equipment solutions like these ensure that event attendees can choose the language they want to hear the interpreted speech in through their receiver.

Wireless Microphones

These infrared interpretation systems transmit the consecutive interpretation from the interpreter consoles to the audience’s headsets. With these translation headsets, the interpreter can work from within the same room as the speaker and the audience listens to the translation through wireless receivers. This option works well for consecutive interpreting and makes it easy to maintain the natural flow of conversations. Should a variety of different languages need to be catered to, you can hire more than one or two interpreters for the event.

Soundproof Booths

The array of different booths that interpreters work from varies depending on the venue. We have fixed as well as portable booth options available for our interpreters. The interpretation booth is usually situated at the back of the event room to ensure the interpreter’s voice doesn’t disrupt the audience or the speaker. We often suggest an interpretation booth and special equipment when it comes to event interpretation as it ensures that the simultaneous interpreter will not be distracted or cause any disruption.

Portable Systems

Portable simultaneous interpretation equipment works well for less formal and smaller meetings and events. This option is very versatile and can be used in an array of scenarios. They also work great for scenarios that call for whispered interpretation and are the least expensive option. With this option, interpreters use compact receivers, and the audience makes use of wireless headsets. We often equip our interpreters with this compact tool when they render their services for tours, presentations, lectures, and site visits.

VRI Software

In some cases, specialized software or some applicable voice conferencing software may be required. This translation equipment and software facilitates virtual remote interpretation (VRI) services via a video call. With this translation style, the interpreter serves as the third party that provides verbal translations for the other two parties in the line. The software could be a mobile app just like the Day Interpreting app, which conveniently connects people to proficient interpreters whenever, wherever.
